Research indicates that 60% of new managers fail in the first 24 months of their new position (CEB). There is much to celebrate with your recent promotion. Make time to celebrate all the work that has led you to this point, however, keep the celebrating to a minimum and get your plan in place to avoid being in that 60 percent.

There are many things contributing to the 60% failure rate. Maybe it was too soon for a promotion. Perhaps the transition from the previous manager was poorly executed. Lack of training has been identified as a cause. Or there was little effort placed on embracing the role and responsibilities. As you begin to manage your team, you will need to establish your plan. There are many tasks to be planned, prioritized, and completed and these things can quickly take priority. Be purposeful in developing your transition plan and ensure your development is included. Be clear in how you will continue to enhance your skillset and build your leadership skills.

If it’s been several years since you first transitioned into a manager role, with your current insight what would you go back and do differently. Share your thoughts with us at HeyThere@ExtraShotOfLeadership.com
